Qualifying Life Event

A Qualifying Life Event (QLE) is an event that when it occurs, allows you to make changes to your benefits. You must report your QLE and are required to provide the supporting documentation within 30 days (or 60 days if related to Medicaid or CHIP coverage changes) of the event. You will only be allowed to make changes that are consistent with the QLE you are reporting.

Examples of QLEs:

  • Birth or Adoption
  • Marriage/ Establishment of Domestic Partnership
  • Divorce/ Legal Separation/ Dissolution of Domestic Partnership 
  • Employee/ Dependent either Gains/ Loses Access to Other Coverage
  • Employee/ Dependent Gains either Gains/ Loses Access to Other Coverage – Medicare/ CHIP
  • Death of an employee, spouse or dependent
  • Attainment of legal guardianship
  • Becoming eligible for Medicare

 

How to report your QLE:

  1. Log-in to the Online Benefits Service Center. If you are a first-time user, you must register first to create your own username and log-in credentials. 
  2. Navigate your mouse to the upper right corner of the page and click on the drop-down arrow next to your name.
  3. Click on “Change my Benefits”.
  4. Click on the drop down that says, “Life Event”.
  5. Choose the life event reason that matches the reason of why you are needing to change your benefits. 
  6. Enter the date of when the life event occurred.
  7. The system will then prompt you to add/ remove your dependents and then make changes to your benefits. 
  8. When finished, click “Approve”.
